Mike Olah reported that a bid had been accepted from a company for installation of the LOC/DME equipment on the north end of the field. Construction of this project is expected to begin early spring of 2007 with a flight check by the FAA on August, 2007. Mike also reported that the snow removal equipment building project would most likely start early this spring as well.

An official survey of the trees and approach slope for runway 19 was presented by Mike and all trees north of Reedsburg Road have been found to comply with the current slope height limitations of 20:1.

The helicopter tours were discussed as the addendum to the FBO contract had expired October 31st, 2006. The FBO had requested an extension fo the addendum allowing specialized commercial flying services through the

end of the FBO contract (2012). With an initial vote of 2-2 it was agreed by the commission that some study should be done with regards to the result of their decision as a 2-2 vote is a no. Mike is going to ask John Dorcey with the Bureau of Aeronautics to see if he can attend the next commission meeting to discuss how the decision may affect airport funding.

The commission also discussed the new security measures that need to be taken on the FBO building which would allow the FBO lobby to be accessible by pilots 24/7. This includes replacing the hollow core doors to the airport manager’s office and the counter area of the FBO with solid doors, punch code locksets for exterior doors and an overhead door for the counter area. This project was included in the 2007 airport budget.

The next commission meeting is set for Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at 1pm. All are invited and encouraged to attend!

Much Learned at the BOA Seminar   By Bill Murphy

The Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics held an airport seminar on Saturday October 21, 2006. If you were unable to attend, I will review the topics.

A member of the Bureau of Aeronautics gave a presentation on aviation weather and how if affects pilots. One very important piece of information that was given was that every Wisconsin pilot will be able to obtain the very weather found at the FBO after the first of the year on their home computer.

The seminar was very interesting! More information on weather and upcoming seminars can be found at www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/air/weather-access.htm.

Winter is fast approaching and the good flying weather is coming to an end. I find myself waking up earlier now that the time has changed. I’m at the airport usually around 5:30-6:00am each morning and it is truly one of the nicest times at the airport. If you want to know the best place to see a sunrise, it’s sitting outside the FBO on a picnic table.

At the last commission meeting we saw a huge step taken by our airport commission. They lowered the application fee to lease land from $500 to $50. This excessive fee set our airport apart from the rest and turned away prospective lessee’s who then built at neighboring airports. Long term leases and steady growth are what produce the annual income our airport needs to operate.

The requirement that each commercial business must enter into a separate contract with the commission will continue to stifle growth and turn away prospective business ventures as well. Our minimum standards were designed

to accomplish this and give a clear published standard that each what we are doing. Our airport currently does not allow its FBO/Flight School to sell and give and airplane rides? I am at a loss to explain why.

Past. KDLL was selected by the Bureau of Aeronautics to be the 1st airport in the state to receive a stand alone GPS approach to our runway “01”. The Bureau sponsored this 100% state funded program that installed 10 stand alone GPS approaches around our state. For the first time, we had an approach from the south. This program was designed to begin using GPS approaches as a stand alone verses only an overlay approach. Many small airports that did not have an instrument approach could now get one with this GPS technology.

Present. Most of our fence bugs seem to be worked out and we have has some pretty good reliability with the automatic gates. Our airport grounds looked better this year than ever before. Our new mowing equipment as well as Evan Doering’s attention to detail, kept things looking great. Our new 22’ mower saved so much time that we

have only spend about half of our fuel budget for this year. At our 2007 budget meeting I got money put in an account to roll the grass runway each year.  In the past this has never been budgeted for. I am calling this the “Jerome Thiessen” fund.

Future. In the spring we will have construction starting on the SRE Building and Loc/DME approach. The approach  will require a building and road on the North end of the airport near Reedsburg Road. We are going to extend the run-out area for runway “01” as far as possible to the north. The remainder of the grass area to the north will be given to our Ag lessee for crops. We will keep an area along the fence in grass as it will be needed for the ingress and egress of airshow traffic as well as maintenance vehicles.

You might find it surprising that… I spent a summer in Stanley, North Dakota flying C340s in and around thunderstorms for a weather modification internship

My goal is… to become a corporate pilot out of the Baraboo airport while still having the opportunity to work on the family farm.
